I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it. Suppose any party, in addition to whatever share it may possess of the ability of the community, has nearly the whole of its stupidity, that party must, by the law of its constitution, be the stupidest party; and I do not see why honorable gentlemen should see that position as at all offensive to them, for it ensures their being always an extremely powerful party . . . There is so much dense, solid force in sheer stupidity, that any body of able men with that force pressing behind them may ensure victory in many a struggle, and many a victory the Conservative party has gained through that power.'John Stuart Mill ( British philosopher, economist, and liberal member of Parliament for Westminster from 1865 to 68 ).","author":"John Stuart Mill","tags":["altruism","conservative","liberal","libertarian","politics","progressive","selfishness"],"id":3527,"author_id":"John+Stuart+Mill"},{"text":"A liberal is a man or a woman or a child who looks forward to a better day, a more tranquil night, and a bright, infinite future.","author":"Leonard Bernstein","tags":["altruism","conservative","government","liberal","libertarian","politics","progressive","selfishness","state"],"id":4565,"author_id":"Leonard+Bernstein"},{"text":"A distaste for the new is not always fear of the unknown, but sometimes ambition. I keep hearing calls for empathy and healing, civility and polite discourse. As if supporting a man who would fill his administration with white nationalists and misogynists is something to simply agree to disagree on.Absolutely not. You don’t get to vote for a person who brags about sexual assault and expect that the women in your life will just shrug their shoulders. You don’t get to play the victim when people unfriend you on Facebook, as if being disliked for supporting a bigot is somehow worse than the suffering that marginalized people will endure under Trump. And you certainly do not get to enjoy a performance by people of color and those in the LGBT community without remark or protest when you enact policies and stoke hatred that put those very people’s lives in danger.Being socially ostracized for supporting Trump is not an infringement of your rights, it’s a reasonable response by those of us who are disgusted, anxious, and afraid. I was recently accused by a writer of “vote shaming” – but there’s nothing wrong with being made to feel ashamed for doing something shameful.","author":"Jessica Valenti","tags":["bigot","bigotry","conservative","democrat","intolerance","liberal","racism","racist","republican","trump"],"id":22945,"author_id":"Jessica+Valenti"},{"text":"What never fails inside the mind of an intellectual never works outside the confines of his head. The world’s stubborn refusal to vindicate the intellectual’s theories serves as proof of humanity’s irrationality, not his own. Thus, the true believer retrenches rather than rethinks; he launches a war on the world, denying reality because it fails to conform to his theories. If intellectuals are not prepared to reconcile theory and practice, then why do they bother to venture outside the ivory tower or the coffeehouse?
